Aside from getting a huge kick out of helping people who want to move their writing forward, I learned a tremendous amount myself about how best to facilitate another’s abilities and also about my own writing at the same time. It is utterly fascinating that the give and take that occurs between artist and audience when a concert is going really well, is just as evident when tutoring a workshop. Black & White 1945 (the year I was born) was written by Ross Brown, who was a student at La Jeuss in 2005. It is an outstanding work and my very great privilege to be able to play it and to have recorded it as well on my recent CD release, How Many Rivers. I think the only help I gave him was encouragement, he really didn’t need anything else and that, for me, is what tutoring a workshop is about, finding out what people want to do and helping them to achieve it.
